Trade Unions
Researching employment opportunities or apprenticeships can be quick and easy by contacting the Local Trade Unions. We encourage members to find out if they need a grade 12 diploma or GED to apply for an apprenticeship opportunity. Many Trade Locals have on-site training facility which is a great way to build on your existing skills. Knowledge is the key to opening doors to better opportunities and we encourage members who would like to work in the trades to contact the trade unions today.
Every year, hundreds of young men and women enter the skilled trades. They become part of a training system that has been in place for centuries - apprenticeship. The approach of combining hands-on experience and mentoring by skilled tradespeople is still as valid today as it was at the start of the last millenium.
Our affiliates have strived to develop a complete training agenda for the construction industry, in trades that start with the excavation of the site and continue till the final coat of paint. We have built on a commitment from unionized contractors to support apprenticeship both on the job and in state of the art training centres. Where once our industry needed to look overseas to fill its manpower needs, today every trade is reaching out to young people in the community to get involved.
A key element in our success is a network of training centres throughout the GTA. They are unique in the fact that they are funded in large part by an hourly contribution by the working members and union contractors.
