Jack Layton and the New Democratic Party visit the Action Centre

Jack Layton and our local NDP candidates visited the action centre on Friday April 16th to hear about the lingering effects on people who don't have a job and seem to have lost hope. Mr. Layton met with laid off workers and representatives from about 25 community groups and service organizations to discuss housing, poverty and other social service issues.

After the meeting Mr. Layton went to Bowmanville to meet with CAW Local 222 members on strike at St. Marys Cement.

"In the real economy, families and seniors aren't out of the recession."  The most upsetting thing for Mr. Layton was hearing "young families, with kids," are the fastest-growing segment to turn to food banks. Young families is "where you should find the most hope. If you go to a food bank, it's not the best food and nutrition. That's the most disheartening," he stated. "The jobs, if you're lucky enough to get one, are part-time and low wages," he stated. "Now is not the time for more corporate tax cuts for banks and oil companies." He said if money is given to seniors, it's spent locally, "helping to turn things around. "I'm taking the stories I heard here today, I'll take them to the government, to the prime minister," Mr. Layton noted.

Joining him were NDP candidates in the next federal election, including Tammy Schoep (Durham), Trish McAuliffe (Whitby-Oshawa) and Chris Buckley (Oshawa).
